We've all met them: the architects of imaginary empires, as Tolkien would say, and legends of their own lunchtime.
They spin narratives so brilliantly that they require their own postcode, yet when it comes time to produce the receipt, the room falls silent. It's a master class in acoustic wallpaper with lots of sound but zero structural integrity.
I'm talking about Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli and his "anai-anai" who are bustling with their fantasy rallies and their pretend moral standards.
Remember how adamant Rafizi and his small band of followers were about insisting that Azam Baki, the MACC chief commissioner, must step down to facilitate investigation into his ownership of some shares, which Bloomberg said was against a government circular?
And of course the puny "Tangkap Azam Baki" rally or should I say "Expect 1 million, got 500 protesters only rally" calling for Azam's arrest over MACC's links to the so-called Corporate Mafia, an allegation fortified by the likes of Albert Tei and Victor Chin?
Allegations based on Bloomberg reports and perhaps their own dark web.
Now that Rafizi himself is under investigation, why hasn't he resigned as an MP?
Why is there no "Tangkap Rafizi Ramli" rally?
Rafizi is being implicated with a sin many times bigger than Azam's imagined sin (or sins). More than a billion ringgit worth of wrongdoing. That's what the media reported: a RM1.1 billion ARM deal, a government deal with UK semiconductor firm Arm Holdings when he was a minister in the government.
Alleged abuse of power, misuse of funds, and maladministration. Rafizi Ramli has denied the allegations. Just as Azam Baki denied the allegations made against him by Bloomberg and Rafizi.
Rafizi's ARM deal was intended to increase Malaysia's semiconductor capabilities but questions have arisen about how it was structured, who might have benefited, and whether proper procedures were followed. So the authorities went in to investigate.
The funniest bit was when Rafizi Ramli tried to create a Drama "Pembantu hilang" to beat the drama that was broadcast on TV3.
Chai Jin Shern aka James Chai, Former special functions/policy officer under Rafizi
is considered a key figure in the investigation. Rafizi seems to be good at this he should consider quitting politics and consider acting or movie production!
The latest Rafizi Ramli series saw the Pandan MP questioned for hours by the MACC yesterday. When he spoke to the media this time he did not appear like the architect of those imaginary empires, though, quoting some MACC provision that forbids him from discussing the investigation into his affairs.
Hilarious, this coming from a guy who would disregard even the mafia for his own gain.
One thing that has become clearer with time is that since his crushing defeat to Nurul Izzah in the party elections last year, Rafizi Ramli has undergone a striking transformation, no longer the same figure who once operated within government ranks and
no longer the man touted as the natural heir to Anwar Ibrahim.
Clear as crystal is the Pandan constituency will be up for grabs in the coming GE ( I read Betty's FB that Tengku Zafrul may be keen! ), regardless of the outcome of the investigation into the Rafizi affair or whether Rafizi would form a new political party he said he would.
I guess we'll find out soon enough what is truth and what is imagined, and who will end up a legend in his own mind.
Arrest Rafizi Ramli!!!
