Azam Baki's tenure as the country's top graft fighter ends May 12, 2026. Sometime last year, I was told, he confided in close friends he would like to step down this year; the government had already extended his term twice.
But in view of the orchestrated campaign to get rid of him and smear the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), I don't think Azam Baki is going to give in. Our MACC chief, abang-abang dan kakal-kakak, is a fighter.
I don't think PMX is going to let him go, either.
More importantly, I don't think the King is going to allow PMX to let Azam go.
The reason why Azam needs to stay is quite simple. Under Azam, the MACC has put away some of the country's most corrupt. And a list of others are waiting to be put away, including the so-called Corporate Mafia.
Never in the history of corruption in this country have so many big crooks been exposed and made to account for their ill-gotten wealth.
And contrary to what fans and followers of Rafizi Ramli, Albert Tei and Victor Chin would want you to believe, keeping Azam Baki at MACC will not be detrimental to PMX and his Madani government.
Why should it be detrimental when MACC's record under AB is something Anwar Ibrahim can brag about, especially in the context of his promised reforms?
Some of the cases worth mentioning, according to the Scoop:
As a result, Malaysia's Corruption Index has continuously improved since PMX took over from a lowly score of 47 in 2022 to 50 in 2023, 52 in 2024 and last year (0 for highly corrupt, 100 is squeaky clean).
These are not my statistics, tuan-tuan dan puan-puan. They are Transparency International's findings and these findings placed Malaysia 54th (out of 184 countries) in 2025 from 52nd position in 2024.
Rafizi, Albert Tei and Victor Chin, who have been inciting Malaysians to go against Azam Baki (and PMX, if doesn't fire the MACC chief or force him to go on garden leave), should start entertaining the idea that this man they fear and loathe will continue with his national service.
Some media, curiously, agreed so quickly to the allegations made against the MACC. Unjournalistic of them, if ask me, seeing that those making the allegations are closer to the Devil thank the angels. I consider myself "wartawan baru belajar" but I cringe when media powerhouses like Harapan Daily.
My request to the Harapan Daily journalists, drop your campaign to get Ayob Khan, the deputy IGP, to replace Azam.
Latifah Koya, the former MACC chief even through political cronyism (Tun Mahathir liked her), should look at herself in the mirror: what did she actually achieve while she was there other than fulfilling her master's bidding?
Another thing Rafizi, Albert Tei, Victor Chin and Kak G-Lat need to remember: the appointment (and extension of the position of MACC chief) is with the consent of is at the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Do not try to pre-empt King. He knows exactly what Azam Baki has been up to because the MACC tells him everything. After all, Tuanku Ibrahim was the one who consented to the extension of our MACC chief's tenure not once but TWICE.
